American tipping culture is insane

I know a server that used to work at one of those fancy outdoor pool clubs, where all the servers wear Bikinis. She used to take home $1500-$3000 a day working a “double” (aka 8 hours). Every single time someone orders bottle service at $600 a bottle, it was immediately $100 in her pocket for 2 minutes of work.

Similar culture for high end restaurants selling expensive bottles of wine. There isn’t a single club server or bartender in the country that would rather have a salary. Because nobody is going to pay them $100/ hour to offset those tips.

Meanwhile the server at Dennies, bringing out tray after tray of hot coffee and heavy plates of food and actually having to talk to the customers and provide decent service are making like $4 a table.
