Americans, why is tipping proportional to the bill? Is there extra work in making a $60 steak over a $20 steak at the same restaurant?

Bartender chiming in here. You call for your take out order- I am now on the phone and not taking care of my customers at the bar. You have questions. Your order is complicated. Finally gets sent to the kitchen. My coworker is now busy packing that order and not tending to other duties - anything for our customers physically there. Then you arrive and want to pick up and pay immediately. I have a full bar. I’ll get to you. Then you don’t tip. Because we didn’t do anything. It’s just take out. We work for you just like any other customers. Show the appreciation. $2 for you is nothing but it means a lot to us.
