An insightful video of self-reflection by a photographer who finally switched camera systems. "we can get emotionally attached to cameras...it's just a lightproof box, with a brand name, that captures images on a sensor or piece of celluloid". 18m long, but watch from 8m for the best discussion.

Yeah, that is true. This video is definitely geared towards those who view photography through the lens of a businessman.

However I am a hobbyist (student with an incredibly scant budget), and this video resonated with me.

I started shooting 6 years ago with a film Konica Autoreflex T3 with 50mm and 28mm primes. Then I upgraded to digital with the Canon 20D, then Canon 50D, then I upgraded to a 60D. The only lenses I frequently used were the EF 50mm 1.8 II, and the Rokinon/Samyang 14mm 2.8. The shift to canon meant I lost use of my konica lenses. But I shoot almost 100% travel landscapes so it didn't matter too much.

I felt that subconsciously I only kept looking out for Canon products for the "next upgrade" whilst dismissing the rest. Because to me Canon = photography. The bodies looked "cool", were durable, and the RAWs edited nicely.

However, after looking at reviews, chatting to friends I only recently sold the 60D and purchased a BRAND NEW A6000 for only $150 on top.

The malleability of RAW files from the sensor have blown me away. The APS-C of the sony is also slightly bigger than Canon, so my field of view on the 14mm has also increased a tad.

Not to mention I've resurrected my old konica lenses with adaptors. Plus the benefits of wireless shutter actuation and all the other bells and whistles have been just amazing. Plus its tiny with the konica lenses compared to the 60D so I'm finding I'm taking the camera with me now when I normally wouldn't.

If I stuck to Canon I'd be forking out a lot more to realise these benefits. With my budget constraints to do what I can do now with the sony....would be at least another 2 years away on the second hand market.

And that's the thing I kept neglecting. All I needed was the best sensor I could get for my budget. The box it comes in is meaningless. Which I feel is the vibe I got from the creator of the youtube video.
