I think nobody is going to like this, but Presidents and ex-Presidents need much less security, and that should extend to all elected officials. The idea that they are untouchable is, in my belief, a large contributing factor to why Presidents like Obama feel they can act unilaterally with no repercussions. The thought should always be in the back of their mind that if they go too far, the citizenry will act against them, and sometimes that will be in a violent way.
Think about it: we watch what we say and do because if we don't, we're going to get our asses kicked. The President is on the very top of the food chain in the world. Having no worries at all about whether or not they could be harmed is a very dangerous thing that emboldens them to act in ways that they know would cause them to come to harm. I think the fact that none of these people are in much danger is partially why we see such partisanship and lack of cooperation from both the DNC and RNC. They've become insulated both geographically and physically from reality.
I do not condone violence, but I do believe the tick should always be there in the back of one's head so that when they get the notion of doing something like say make millions of illegal immigrants legal without the consent of congress, that they think twice.
