How should you wash a car?

Automatic car washes are fine if you don't mind swirls and light scratches, and the fact that they don't do a really thorough job.

Doing it yourself is the best way to ensure it gets done properly and isn't abused with dirty cloths, harsh chemicals etc. Either that or paying a local professional detailer. Doesn't need to break the bank if all you want is a wash (i.e. no paint corrections, sealants, interior valet etc.).

A simple two bucket method should do the trick. If you're unable to use a hose to rinse it properly, then do two passes: wash top to bottom with the two bucket method, then clean out/refresh the buckets and do it again with a clean mitt. If you're able to, chuck a clean bucket of water over the top afterwards to reduce water spots. Make sure you dry it afterwards with a couple of microfibre towels, or the dust in the air will stick to your newly cleaned car.
