Anyone here who doesn't support USSR, Cuba, Mao's China etc?

Cuba doesn't seem like too bad of a place to live despite economic problems. They're not a particularly wealthy nation because of their history with imperialism and the ongoing embargo from the U.S. but at least the health care is excellent and that's a big plus. Aesthetically it's also a very beautiful country.

The Soviet Union and Mao's China are different story. I think most people can agree that a country is its people. Infrastructure, economy, healthcare, education, etc. don't count for anything if there's no population to support. The way I see it, when you kill millions of your citizens with whatever method, it really defeats the purpose of changing the system no matter how good your intentions are. I think this especially rings true with communism, a system that's supposed to help the working class.

Then again, communism's body count doesn't even compare to capitalism's and imperialism's and it's not the only system or revolution that violence can be attributed to. Just look at France's Reign of Terror or the Congo Free State.

The thing about the U.S. is that although we are prosperous and the land within our borders is peaceful, our abuses of power take place elsewhere. Look at our history of imperialism and even recent events like the Iraq War and our military's continued presence in the middle east. Many have died at the hands of the United States and our allies but it's largely ignored compared to the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge or Mao's China because it doesn't happen here and it's been largely accepted as just systemic violence.

A poor, violent nation is going to be a poor, violent nation regardless of which system is in place. There is no magical panacea that will cure these things in a manner of a few years.

So no, I don't really support Mao's China or the Soviet Union. I think they had a good start but things weren't handled well and I don't like the extremely totalitarian tendencies of both regimes. That said, I don't really support the U.S. even though I'm a citizen.
