To anyone who has ordered a mail order bride, what was it like and what happened?

Not mail-order but basically that was the intent. My friend's the bride (27F) of a Japanese man (45M).

My friend's signed up on a penpal site (the kind that supposedly connects people to practice each other's language), and her penpal instantly told her that he's just looking for a bride. She somehow fell in love with him that week (it helps that she had a huge thing for Japan and terrible self esteem). They went through the arduous process of gettig engaged and she eventually moved to Japan and they got married.

She always says that she's really happy and they act as a happy couple but every time I talk to her she's depressed over the way he treats her, she's living in a bubble where she just tries to think that that's how Japanese people are and it can't be helped, and I'm really concerned about her well-being, but she has the 'I brought this upon myself so I'll stick to it' attitude. She doesn't realise that she was basically a mail-order bride, and has a lot of cogntive dissonance going on. He is as nice As he can be to her and I do believe that they're both in love, it's just that 'as nice as he can be' can still be pretty emotionally abusive with some people; she hadn't dated much beforehand so she thinks his behaviour is normal.
