Why are non-narrative styles widely accepted in music, literature and video games, but dismissed as boring and pretentious in cinema?

All prominent poetry has a narrative, and all prominent classical music had narratives via structure in composition. That said, music can't be compared here because it relies on intrinsic evoking of emotion and doesn't require active analysis. Games which don't rely on a narrative are obviously not comparable either, since it's absurd to compare Minesweeper or Flower to a movie. You could change the term "narrative" to "objective", and then each game would also have a narrative. Thinking of it this way, non-narrative stuff like Planet Earth being popular makes sense. It's quality video which has a clear purpose.

A better comparison for purposeless abstract movies would be abstract art, where it's boring and pretentious. Put together anything at all, and an academic could weave together an internally consistent "meaning". The broom symbolizes grief, the black/white symbolizes the past, etc, etc. It's complete bullshit, which has its place in high culture just because it's uncommon and can easily/dynamically be interpreted to suit social situations. Any fan of abstract art will never badmouth abstract film, even if they don't watch them. They both serve the same purpose. Being purposeless trash you can twist into having whatever purpose you want amid particular kinds of people, or just using it for status/personality.
