I hate this scene and I don't think it's funny at all, and maybe if Max was doing what Lorelai did, no one would have accepted it.

Also, Lorelai was stalking Max because she was lonely after her relationship with Alex started to fade and because she was so jealous of Luke's relationship with Nicole especially after she saw them together at the inn, so she went to Max right after that, because she wanted to get back to someone familiar and she knows Max is still attracted to her, Lorelai never loved Max so it was a good thing from Max to turn her down because she was going to repeat the same mistakes with him.

I think Max's comeback was due to the departure of Alex's character and to give a closure to his relationship with Lorelai especially since we didn't see how they broke up when Lorelai ran away before marriage.

I don't know why Luke and Lorelai's love interests have come back so much, especially since they were just obstacles in L&L's road.
