We dont talk about any of the other brutal crimes such as rape and robbery and murder and such that occur in this town. Why should this one be any different? Then when things like that get mentioned and brought up as valid reasons why non prohibited people should carry, (I understand this was a highschool girl and all but I'm speaking about crime in general in this city) it gets down voted to hell and the flaming liberals come out of the woodwork to call you a gun toting right wing nut job, when youre actually a left of center libertarian who is just aware of his surroundings and how volatile and unpredictable this place is.
When you say things like "women getting raped and robbed while jogging downtown" people say "where'd this happen at? Ive been here 10-12 years and never heard of such." Then you post them the damn article from three different sources, and then a 69 YEAR OLD MAN gets raped while jogging in North Chatt the very same week as the conversation is happening, and STILL, even more crickets. Or you get the old "well, the news sensationalizes things a lot" balderdash.
Yet let a new craft beer store open or a new vegan, locally-sourced, organic, burrito joint open up, or a farmers market or heady festivals or craft beer or wine festival happens, and its top of the page with lots of comments. Or the standard "moving/visiting soon where to live/eat/work/play" post comes up and its the same old-same old. From my POV everyone here likes to get drunk and pretend bad things don't happen here.
I'm not sure what news sources alot of you guys read, but I go to chattanoogan.com before I go anywhere else. Alot of people dont like that guy for whatever reasons and consider him hackish, but I think he does a great job reporting news in the city, especially crime. I see things on there that the big 3 wont even touch, a lot of federal court stuff, and he doesn't fluff anything up. He goes to courts proceedings himself, takes notes, and writes his own stuff. No loss or distortions of details. Just facts as they are presented in court.
We've got a sub just for trading. A sub for potheads. A sub for discgolf. A sub for gamers. A sub for developers and computer folks. A ladies sub..(really? wheres the man cave sub?) And OF COURSE a chattanooga BEER sub.
Maybe we need a crime sub, or a neighborhood watch and security type sub. Where residents can come and discuss crime and other related safety and security issues in their neighborhoods.
