Autistic people of Reddit, what is autism really like?

For me and my mild autism i can say it's very difficult being in crowded areas for one. Bars, parties, etc. I have trouble filtering out all the conversation and noise and can be overwhelmed almost immediately (causing me trouble to speak and feeling generally uncomfortable) even if the spotlight isn't on me.

Also one thing I've noticed is my thoughts are fluid and intelligent (not to sound pompous) but I can't properly communicate to people in a way that makes it seem so. Unless I've had a few beers and Im in a very comfortable environment. That's been the real frustration with this battle.

Can also kiss speaking to attractive women goodbye.

Most of it is social as you can tell but there's also other things, like the ability to obsess over one thing forever (mine is automobiles) without any reason for it. Had no influence from family or friends growing up, just became obsessed as a child. Obviously people have their interests and hobbies, but people with autism spectrum can zero in on one thing like there's no tomorrow. I've met other people in the spectrum who also relate to that.

Annnd besides being academically challenged and emotionally heightened that's all I can say for myself personally.
