I "know something" about headphones, and own or have owned good pairs from Audiotechnica, Sony, and AKG. Are Beats stupid to buy if you're going to be using them mostly/entirely in private or if you don't care about appearances? Yeah, no doubt. But if you like to wear or use your headphones often in public, and you don't want to look weird doing so, I'd argue they're not a bad buy.

Go out on the street and see how many people are wearing or using Beats. Now see how many people are using pairs from all of the audiophile brands put together, minus maybe Bose because those are also incessantly marketed. No one's going to think twice if they see you with Beats on and that's a nice thing to have.
