Boss asked if we could 3D print a new stand for his microphone. Engineers complied accordingly

Why does everyone think engineers are the ones that design things?

I wasted 2 years of uni before I changed courses because my parents didn’t know that engineers aren’t designers.

I’m generalising, and engineers can design but that’s not they’re main job.

Very basically; engineers make sure things don’t break, and take the responsibility if they do.

Designers design, engineers make sure its strong enough / lasts long enough.

Architects / interior designers design, civil engineers make sure the buildings don’t fall down.

Further to that; concept artists are also only what they’re name implies, they’re not really designers. Designers sit somewhere on the spectrum between artists and engineers.

I’m generalising and I only mean this typically, but if you were to categorise them like classes in an rpg:

Artists are highly artistically skilled, moderately to highly creative and minimally technical/practical.

Designers are moderately artistically skilled, highly creative and moderately technical/practical.

Engineers are minimally artistically skilled, moderately creative and highly technical/ practical.
