Canadian military wants to establish new organization to use propaganda, other techniques to influence Canadians

So, this is why this kind of campaign is important. War is simply not fought solely with bullets and kinetic weapons anymore. Social media has proven to be a tool stronger than any of us could have imagined.

It would be absolutley foolish for of government, and military not to learn how to harness it, counter it, and weaponize it.

Or we have the potential to end up in a situation like the US is finding itself in.

What the Canadian Forces want to do is to understand the way foreign powers use disinformation to pit a country's population against itself and to develop countermeasures that will allow it to fight foreign propaganda inside Canada with greater success.

This is a new kind of warfare and the Canadian Force must master its techniques before a foreign power uses it to destroy our social cohesion.

This is called "getting your enemy to fight itself", something Russia and, to a certain extent, China are very good at.

The technique itself can be summed up as "finding the sticking points inside a country, the fears and amplifying them to the point of creating generalized chaos in the country"...

Practical example: Quebec Separatism

Russia starts boosting the profile of hard core separatists in Quebec through fake social media accounts, providing them with resources and capabilities, organizing marches and separatist rallies, managing to give exposure to the separatist leaders in foreign media... Until the Canadian traditional media finds itself with no choice but to talk about the issue.

Simultaneously, Russia boost anti-francophone groups in the East and the West, groups that will spew aggressive anti-French propaganda, accusing them of all sorts of sordid crimes, stoking the flames of intolerance. We can think of organizing campaigns of vandalism against Quebec plated cars in Ontario and New Brunswick or any province, demonstration against french as an official language in Canada, demanding Quebec reimburses Equalization it got in the past 50 years... All things to convince Quebecois they are not welcome in Canada so they vote "Yes" at the next referendum.

If Russia succeeds, Canada is EITHER split in two with Quebec as a hard border between Ontario and the Maritime provinces OR Canada is plunged in a civil war where Russia covertly feeds the separatists with weapons and logistical support like it did in Ukraine.
