I think you're exaggerating things a bit when you say you may not even have a choice. More often than not, the default corporate choice is Windows OS / Windows hardware. Otherwise you're in California, working for a startup, or working in some other higher level position. If you're not doing iOS/OS X dev it has only been fairly recently that large companies have offered Macbooks as a choice for developers more frequently. I likely wouldn't have bought any Apple hardware if I didn't work on an iOS project that got me into it. Now all my hardware is Apple and I greatly prefer it even for non iOS development.
