Health and Behavior Risks of Adolescents with Mixed-Race Identity

Additional article information Abstract

Objectives. This study compared the health and risk status of adolescents who identify with 1 race with those identifying with more than 1 race.

Methods. Data are derived from self-reports of race, using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), which provides a large representative national sample of adolescents in grades 7 through 12. Respondents could report more than 1 race.

Results. Mixed-race adolescents showed higher risk when compared with single-race adolescents on general health questions, school experience, smoking and drinking, and other risk variables.

"Adolescents who self-identify as more than 1 race are at higher health and behavior risks. The findings are compatible with interpreting the elevated risk of mixed race as associated with stress."
"The most common explanation for the high-risk status is the struggle with identity formation, leading to lack of self-esteem, social isolation, and problems of family dynamics in mixed-race households. This literature is not entirely consistent. In some studies no differences are found between mixed-race and single-race children."
This leads me, and apparently the researchers, to believe that this issue is more cultural than genetic.

Bone Marrow Transplants: When Race Is an Issue

So people with more genetic variation have a harder time finding donors with sufficient genetic similarity. This is unsurprising, and, while interesting, not what I was talking about when I said I thought genetic variation was generally a good thing. I was thinking more genetic, not cultural, positives.

NOAA Tech Memo NMFS-NWFSC-30: Genetic Effects of Straying

This is a behemoth of an article, and it doesn't have an abstract. That said, I want to draw attention to one word: "isolated". I doubt the human "races" as we know them, especially white and black Americans, are genetically isolated for the phenomenon in this aricle to be a problem. On the same hand, I doubt human "races" are genetically isolated enough for mixed race people to have any tangible genetic benefit over single race people, but you're the one claiming a difference.
I also want to point out that while this article points out an interesting phenomenon of isolated populations breeding that I hadn't even considered, it still acknowledges the benefits of genetic variation: "In summary, consider a hypothetical population in which an individual mates at random with an unrelated individual in the same population. Other individuals may mate with a sibling, a cousin, or other close relative, and as this mating between relatives continues we begin to see the effects of inbreeding depression. The more closely related two mated individuals are, the greater the depression in fitness that is expected to appear in their offspring. On the other hand, matings of unrelated individuals from genetically diverged populations of the same species may produce outbreeding enhancement, if different deleterious mutations have accumulated in the two populations."
It then goes on to say that if it was that simple, genetic variation would be the end-all be-all, but that it's not that simple. So their research was more of a minor nuance on the general rule of "genetic variation = good".

The Biological Realities of Race

I'd prefer to see the study in the researchers' own words, if you have the link. The website you linked to, and, by extension, the commentary it provides, is decidedly not very objective: http://www.amren.com/

Same as above; holy shit this website: http://erectuswalksamongst.us/

I'm kinda bored of this. I don't think it's unfair to respond to 4 or 5 of the more than 10 websites you linked me and call it a night. If you have a point then make it concisely; burying me in links is hardly fair.v
