CMV: Bernie Sanders understands the complexity and nuances of racial issues in the United States and is the most race conscious candidate running for president of the two major parties.

I think what we have to understand here is that hindsight is 20/20. Yes, now, we can see that the policies had bad unintended consequences, at the the time it was a solution to a pressing issue. With hindsight can we see that there may have been other solutions? Absolutely, but we have 20 years more time to look back on it. The fact is Black voters agree that she helped, even with the consequences.

You seem to want her to understand what it's like to be black more than black people do themselves. Isn't that kind of patronizing?

Imagine for a moment if a Baby Boomer visited a college to learn about the problems of today's generation.

Everyone told him, "The only way to afford school is through debt. Please help manage the exponential growth of tuition." But instead of going "OK, let's make a plan to manage tuition," He declared "Nah. You don't know what the problems are. I'm going to go work on improving the quality for dorm rooms, because I don't think you know what the real problems of a modern undergrad is." That's what you wanted Clinton to do. To ignore the consensus of her constituents and create a solution that we still haven't figured out two decades later.

I have no idea what it was like to live in those communities in the 80's. I wasn't born yet. So when people come and tell me that a policy I didn't live through helped despite the unintended consequences, I'm going to believe them. Why? Because I know that my armchair internet research doesn't trump the experience of someone who was actually there. How would I be any different than the hypothetical baby boomer, flat out ignoring the people who he's trying to represent?
