CMV: Jefferson Davis Statue on my campus should stay.

I'm currently filling in my response to decide whether the statue of Jefferson Davis Adolf Hitler should stay on my campus (University of Dusseldorf).

A few of my strongest reasons.

Slavery Mass murder is a huge history basically every civilization that has existed utilized some form of slave labor mass murder. So if supporting slavery mass murder is a criteria for tearing down someones statue we've got most historical figures on that list.

It's part of America's Europe's and my Campus's history. Not like the damn thing went up yesterday. It's over 100 60 years old.

What about /u/cheeze2005's statue? What if I actually manage to do something worth remembering with a statue and 150 years later it gets torn down for whatever reason.

So should I change my view reddit?

Yes. With the exception of the Nazis, the Confederacy is one of the most vile institutions for which men have ever fought for. And unlike Germany, who now have an unending sense of shame, apology, and regret about World War 2 and the genocides, the South of the United States continues to act like it had some sense of right in the whole war - when it did not.

Jefferson Davis was basically team captain for team Slavery, not at all like Hitler was team captain for Team Fascism. Shit, Hitler made something worth remembering, but it was vile and terrible, and a statue to Hitler seems like a bit of a celebration for a historical figure that ought to be reviled. I really don't see the exemption for Davis representing lifetimes of forced labour for what he perceived as "lesser races."

And if you presided over an era of similar tyranny and despair and torture and cruelty and horrible actions of violence and prejudice on their equals, then I would hope hope the statue of you get ripped down, burned, and buried.
