CMV:Muhammad Cartoon Contests are Terrible Exercises of Freedom of Speech

It's not like an American calling everyone a cunt, because that is pejorative. It is like an Australian calling everyone a cunt, because that's not a bad word over there. Australians should be able to use Australian terminology, and Americans shouldn't be offended by it.

Exactly, but that is in Australia that it isn't rude - but, out of respect, if there were nearby elderly people who had spent their lives growing up in a prudish society, and always being told by parents friends and family not to say such words, and that such words were obnoxious and unfriendly and to hear them would upset them, a decent person wouldn't walk around saying cunt regardless of whether they thought it was rude not. I don't think the word fuck is rude and don't flinch when saying it, but out of respect I would NEVER say it in front of my grandparents. And I actually swear quite often normally, so this would make a MUCH bigger difference to me than not drawing a picture of a prophet. Moreover a large percentage of many countries are now muslim, so it's not even like just holding my tongue around grandparents, it's like just holding my tongue in public when a notable percentage of people around me are like my grandparents.

Muslims not wanting Muhammad to be shown is not actively impinging my life in a day to day basis, it doesn't prevent me getting married or having kids or something to that extent, it literally makes jack shit difference to me whether I can draw Muhammad or not, unlike anti gay marriage which will make a much bigger difference to a LOT more people. Not cursing probably does impinge on me a little bit, but in reality I really don't care. And I don't care if it is a matter of principle because the practical application of this principle is frankly trivial; there is no need to draw Muhammad. It does not affect me, so I don't feel the need to insult millions of people who aren't aggressive just to send a message to those who are.

It's their issue if they get offended by an innocuous drawing.

They hold the beliefs they do because their parents taught them from being young; it's not their fault that being offended by an image sacred to their religion is programmed into their brains. Moreover even if they aren't offended, the pressure of their religion likely convinces them that they should be. The fact you deem it innocuous is irrelevant for the same reason as before; I don't deem fuck to be a bad word but out of respect I hold my tongue around people who do.

That's like saying slaves in the U.S. weren't actually denied any rights because all they had to do was not recognize U.S. law and stop obeying their masters. Then they wouldn't be slaves anymore, except for the whole part where they would be murdered

Fair enough, I see your point.

Despite what you say regarding "the right" though, I feel like the people drawing pictures of Muhammad are the only ones actually seem to care about the right to do so; if you want to fight for the right to draw Muhammad then sure, good for you, I respect how highly you value the freedom to do what you want. I am impressed that you would risk death just to be allowed to draw anything you want. But don't try to act like you're doing this for me, because I value not offending lots of people more highly than I value being allowed to draw a picture of some dude who lived 1200 years ago. I have a good friend who is a muslim, and guess what? I don't want to draw a picture of Muhammad and show him, and then claim "I can do this, and I will carry on doing it because if I can't then all my other rights will dissolve before my very eyes". I don't give a shit about being allowed to draw Muhammad and wave it around in public and insult people, because there are far more things I'd rather spend my time doing to be honest.
