CMV: Schools should prefer require students to read and give them a choice of what they read rather than requiring them to read specific books.

I understand that, but why only have required reading? I understand English class isn't supposed to make kids like reading, but why not at least try to help them enjoy it? That's a benefit to the student, and doesn't hurt.

I'm not saying to remove it from the curriculum. I never said that. I don't know why people keep assuming that. I'm saying that it's useless to have a discussion when a decent portion of the class doesn't care about the discussion. If kids grow up to enjoy reading, then having a discussion is more useful.

Not all students can read elsewhere, and not all students will read elsewhere. Requiring kids to read a book of their choice will make them read, but at least they'll enjoy it more then being forced to read.
