The criticism of Americans for being monolingual is unwarranted

It's always been weird to me that America gets so much shit for being monolingual. I grew up in Texas and there is this whole trope of people living in the south being like "PRESS ONE FOR ENGLISH OR GO BACK HOME" or whatever it is. Those people exist, but they are absolutely a minority. Even the most white trash, Trump thumpin', pseudo-patriots down here at least speak some Spanish, especially slang, because it's ingrained in the culture. If you work a labor job you better know at least some Spanish. The best Mexican/Tex-Mex places usually have their bilingual kids taking orders, but if you want to read the menu it doesn't hurt to know some Spanish. Most signs are written in both English and Spanish despite the fact it's not legally required.

Strangely enough the people I have met who are irritated by it the most are American Latinos who don't like the Mexican immigrants because they think they should have to jump through the same hoops they did to "earn" there American citizenship.
