Critique Thread: Post all [Critique]s here! - December 04, 2015

15/M

I haven't really gone through vocal instructors or any actual help, but I do occasionally ask for my friends' feedback whenever I can, although I'm quick to dismiss anything they say since I distrust asking family member and close friends to critique... anything (mainly since they hold back in an attempt to not hurt my feelings or whatever). I have this awesome friend who I think is amazing at singing, and I usually go to her for singing advice since she's very well seasoned in what she does. According to her, the area I need to work the MOST on is how nasal my voice tends to sound. I've tried pinching my noise and singing so that I could get that natural "opening the throat" feeling, but once I let go I'm back to square one. Another thing I'd like to learn is proper vibrato. I understand that in order to achieve vibrato, moving the jaw isn't the key, nor is forcing your voice to sound that way. I also have zero experience with belting, so It sounds more like I'm yelling than actually singing. And lastly, I feel like I try a little too hard to enunciate certain words and sing riffs, but rest assured that I'm going to keep practicing until I learn to sing properly. Here is a recording of me singing the chorus to "Fire Meet Gasoline" by Sia Furler, but I'll keep it brief since I don't want the lodgers to think I'm dying or anything. (By the way, I haven't really "found my voice" unfortunately, but I do try my best with whatever I do. My voice here will sound a little higher than I'm really used to, just a heads-up (I also don't have high-quality recording equipment, so forgive me if it sounds worse than usual. (Also, I'm not naturally a tenor according to my chorus teacher. She told me to try singing on a much lower octave since that's where my range is, but I'm not really a fan of sounding like Elvis Presley.)

And one last thing, I really love music with all my heart and feel at peace whenever I sing or practice my keyboard.
