DAE hate it when people respond with “that sucks” when you confide in them?

I don't hate it, I appreciate them trying. Discussing heavy emotional stuff is never easy, both to the speaker and the listener. Maybe it's all new to them and they need to take extra time to process the information, so the only thing they think they can say to acknowledge the situation is:"That sucks." And it's fine by me because it does suck. Maybe they aren't sure of what to reply and they don't want to trigger any negative emotions. Not everyone is equipped to deal with the complexity of human emotions. Personally, if they lent me an ear and listened to me talk, that's more than enough to show they care. Even if they don't say anything back. I've been in situations where I was left speechless after listening to someone so I do understand.
