Daily Discussion: Future Friday

I’m deciding on giving notice but feel torn as I messed up negotiations.

Current company

  • $110k base
  • $145k TC expected

The good

  • Amazing work life balance
  • 40 days off between vacation/sick
  • I’m a well established proven performer
  • Expecting around $20k in bonus, 401k matching, & RSUs in the next few months
  • WFH
  • mostly great coworkers

The bad

  • Rocky financially
  • Layoffs, constantly trying to save on costs, some degree of hiring freeze, impending reorgs
  • Internal politics including some shady management (I see an intern sniffing around my job, worried about being replaced for less $)
  • My day to day responsibilities are often in slight flux

Accepted external offer

  • $145k base
  • $148k TC

The good

  • Seems like a boring but financially stable org
  • Direct manager seems like a good fit
  • WLB reviewed as okay but you never know
  • Clearly defined role that doesn’t change
  • WFH

The bad

  • 33 days off - not bad per se but less than current
  • Losing out on expected bonuses, RSUs
  • Basically being new - proving myself again, establishing WLB& boundaries, having to learn a new role
  • Rumored to have little room for advancement

I recognize I did a poor job negotiating my external offer as I don’t have a sign on to make up for lost $ but I have already accepted. Basically didn’t want to risk losing the offer entirely after going back & forth with recruiter.

How do you value higher base pay versus total comp? What would you do?
