Daily FI discussion thread - February 23, 2017

My husband and I both had to take Tuesday off this week to mitigate flooding of our property. He had to dig out a snow dam that had formed in drainage ditches a few miles away, while I kept the sump pumps and wet vac running. It was very very unseasonably warm for February, though this happened 2 years ago as well, just later in the year.

In my frustration and exhaustion I declared my desire to move someplace where basements don't flood. Boise, Tempe, Denver, whatever! Why stay here? We don't have family roots and our jobs are replaceable.

What we do have is 10 acres of quiet property and a 20 minute drive to "town" which makes for a reasonable commute. We've discussed building a new house on the same property with proper landscaping to prevent water issues, but I'm wondering if there is a point. We could buy different land and build there. I don't have a particular place in mind other than "not here" but having lived so few other places, I expect the reality is that I would be exchanging one type of problem for another. Long story short, I am stressing my husband out a lot.

Absent family ties, what keeps you in your current location?
