Daily Headphone Purchase Advice thread (2016-01-30)

Alright, reposting my thread (sorry again):

Hi !

My current headphones are a pair of filthy USB Corsair Vengeance v2 (I didn't want to bother with a separate microphone when I bought them, and yes I have regrets/feel terrible). I also have a pair of actually pretty good Yamaha NX-50 speakers, that are use with the audio chipset of my motherboard (SupremeFX chip).
I've been wanting to upgrade for quite a while now, and I guess that's the moment. I have a budget of about 400€ for:

  • Probably a Modmic (already minus 50€)
  • The headphones, obviously, but while I know a few good models, I really don't know about where to allocate portions of my budget so I'll leave that up to your recommendations.
  • A replacement for my shitty audio chipset (I'll probably keep my speakers on the chipset, since I'm already pretty satisfied with them, I mainly use my headphones anyway): There, I'm not really sure. Should I get a standalone soundcard plus an amp ? Or a USB DAC ? Uh.

As you can probably see I don't really know what I'm doing (sorry about that), but kinda looking forward to join you here.
Thanks in advance !

Cleaner format:

  • Budget - 400€, maybe a bit flexible.
  • Source - TBD.
  • Requirements for Isolation - Nope.
  • Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - Nope.
  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Full-size.
  • Preferred tonal balance - Balanced.
  • Past headphones - A headset from Corsair, their Vengeance v2. I don't expect a fantastic mic, but I do expect something less gaming-orientated.
  • Preferred Music - My tastes are pretty varied so I don't expect something really specialized.
  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up - I don't have a proper setup yet, so pretty much everything I guess ?
  • Location - France
