It's not like you had to seek out David Duke to know who he is, and/or you must have been actively tuning him out. I recall hearing about him just listening to the various evening news shows back in the late '80s, as a teenager. Afterall, it's not everyday that a former Imperial Wizard of the KKK, who openly admits that, tries to run for a national office, and succeeds in winning a state-level office. It has nothing to do with "liberals" promoting or advertising him since he won a House seat in Louisiana, which kinda guarantees him some air time, unless you're gonna try to blame his victory on liberals, in which case I'll ask you to factually back up that assertion.
