Desert transplant seeking advice for preparing for winter

If you have little or no experience driving on icy/snowy roads, get some in an empty parking lot before you need to get somewhere. Even a light dusting of snow can be covering ice. I got hit while stopped at an intersection last year by a 16 year old who had no experience and thought that it was perfectly fine to drive at normal speeds on the icy road. Get used to that sickening feeling when you hit the brakes and it feels like you actually speed up. Remember that the main roads will be cleared and salted but when you turn on to a smaller road it may be a whole new ball game.

First snowy icy mix, hop in the car at night when all the sane people are staying indoors, and learn how to get around before the next day commute begins. Find an empty parking lot, or head to the nearest industrial part of town, and do donuts for a while. It’s fun as hell.
