[Discussion] Am I wasting my time looking at rescue centres for a new dog?

I have volunteered with 4 UK dog rescues. I can ASSURE you that no rescue I know of has a blanket ban on people with any specific working hours. It is based on the INDIVIDUAL dogs needs. Obviously 12 hrs shifts are a no-no but full working day is passable with the right dog - eg. a dog who has lived with a working family and was content. Dogs who rescues won't entertain a full time worker for are usually stray (no house training or destructiveness record), pups (because, obvious) and dogs with seperation issues (again for obvious reasons).

Many greyhounds in UK rescues are straight off the track, never lived in a house and therefore wouldn't have been suitable for someone who is out all day. If you only asked about one dog who they deemed unsuitable, they may not necessarily suggest others. You need to be present to train the dog and taking a fortnights holiday is rarely enough. I'd say definitely go back to the rescue and ask to speak to a supervisor, explain you came away disappointed, explain your situation and what provisions you'd be willing to make (family popping in, dog walker, walks AM & PM) and ask if they can suggest a suitable dog.

You'll find the type of dog you need is the hardest to find and yet the most requested. Rescues are full of other people's mistakes - not well trained dogs who are happy home alone. The rescue staff aren't there to make it hard, they are there to make sure these dogs don't go through again, what they already have done and to ensure the owner doesn't take on an unsuccessful adoption.

I have adopted 4 dogs - a mixture from Dogs Trust and RSPCA and have always worked full time.
