Does anyone know how to stop my cat from doing this?

Edit: like with so many things lately, the response of “science?! Who cares?! I know better because of [some meaningless anecdote]” has become the popular response. Who cares? Anecdotes mean nothing. Actual scientific studies have been done

One day you’ll learn that one scientific study isn’t definitive proof. Studies can be flawed, inconclusive, or misleading, especially about something as complicated as cat psychology. I know it feels good to claim that you have science on your side, but please understand that you’re coming across as very naive.

Find me a couple of animal behavior experts who say that we know with confidence that cats “don’t understand negative consequences” and I’ll concede the point.

In fact, the very first result I got in Google states:

The key to successfully stopping undesirable behavior is to associate an unpleasant consequence with the undesirable behavior.

That certainly contradicts your assertion that cats “don’t understand negative consequences.” I guess that animal hospital is just relying on anecdotes, right? Maybe you can send them those “studies” you’re referring to?
