Does gender even matter? Instead of "switching" why not just abandon it all together?

Imagine you enter a gigantic dance hall. As you enter, you're given a blue hat. Many other people are given blue hats as well, but about half the people get red hats instead. Which hat you get determines which role you have in the dance.

The dance has been going on a long time, and it's extremely complicated, and takes quite some time to learn. At the far end of the room, where all the eyes are focused, are the people who've mastered the dance, and it's quite a sight to behold: people spinning each other around, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, at this level of expertise a single misstep could throw off a hundred other people, and every split second is crucial, but it works, it's a dance that's taken literally millennia to evolve and it's a lovely thing to watch.

At the entry of the dance hall things aren't nearly as graceful, people trip over each other all the time and it takes quite a while to learn the moves of the masters, but gradually people get the hang of it and move up the hall as the masters retire. It's hard work, but most people advance, and it takes awhile to figure out why every one else keeps getting ahead and you're still stuck in the entryway falling down all the time.

You eventually realize your problem is you've been emulating the red hats this entire time, but since you've got a blue hat on your head everyone keeps expecting you to dance the way the blue hats do which is why you keep running into people, taking the wing arm and so on. After quite some trouble you try putting a red hat on your head and the dance steps come easier, you even start making your way down the hall towards the the masters of The Dance.
