On top of what the other commenter said, there's a lot more to the trip than just the visual effects, which at least on acid, are relatively minor at non-extreme doses. The mental effects, however, are not minor so you should not decide to trip just for the visuals.

Your own mind can feel very alien to you and then you can completely lose your sense of your self if you take a high enough dosage. If you stick to the low-medium dosages the mental effects are more like all emotions being amplified, everything seeming to take on a deeper level of meaning than it usually does, having multiple overlapping thought loops, time will pass more slowly, you'll have thoughts you've never had before, maybe thoughts you wish you never did have (it pretty much removes your mental filter, you think about everything), etc.
