During a casual chat with a German superior I off handedly mentioned English village life "can be a bit like Royston Vasey" and now I'm afraid she will judge me based on my taste in 90s bizarist television

That really interesting and I'm grateful for your perspective! I think these days, given the cultural awareness of trans hatred and rights issues that exist contemporarily and the sensitivity that commands, Babs wouldnt (and shouldn't) be a character that exists in the modern day. Especially as caricatured by a cis person. Maybe if it was a trans person being like "no, we can be a certain way that is actually lols" it would be different, as it would be more in-group jokes rather than oppressive mockery. I think that's fair, just as we wouldn't have a Precious Little from Come Fly With Me portrayed by the white Matt Lucas today.

However, and it's a HUGE however, shit a few years ago was different. Hell, a famously 'unproblematic' favourite youtuber got called out for blackface a couple of years back, and I saw a video from a black commentator who said 'we could have cancelled her back then, but that wasn't the energy at the time'. I think about that a lot. When I see something that denigrates LGBTQ people I ask myself "was that the energy at the time?" and if the answer is no, I give the people who made the media the opportunity to grow and understand how some jokes are just jokes and some jokes are harmful in more extensive ways. There's always room for jokes and there's always room for growth!
