ELI5: Why are video games, or gamers themselves, viewed in such a negative light by a large portion of society in relation to other mediums?

Just like to add to this. As much as some people try and claim it does, it most cases gaming requires no intelligence, in most cases reading does. Another point is a lot of people that play games let it consume their lives, most games require a lot of playtime to complete the story, a lot of online games are highly addicted and a progression system inclines players to continue to play for a long time. Another thing is a lot of gamers end up in a bad health state, sitting in one position for hours on end, eating fast good, neglecting their hygiene. Of course that is just a stereotype however it is quite common. Another thing is it can servery limit people's school work, I have seen a lot of cases(Currently going through the education system) where people gave neglected revising or doing homework just to play games, a lot of them also get very little sleep due to playing games. Of course there can be cases of this with other forms of entertainment such as TV as well, however with most TV series airing at regular intervals you can't sit down and spend all day watching it unless catching up. This is only my take on it anyway, I do understand that the TV part isn't nessecarily true but I do find the games part to be pretty accurate. I also used to let games affect my life, just not to a serious extent.
