ELI5:Why is circumcision incredibly commonplace, and seen as normal. But removal of the clitoris is considered genital mutilation? Is circumcision technically genital mutilation?

While I don't have a penis, I do come from a religion that practices it. Religiously there is a huge difference between circumcision and female genital mutilation. Circumcision stems from a need for cleanliness. Now that is outdated and unnecessary today, but that is the historic religious element.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is done as a sexist act as a way to control women. It is often not done as a baby, but rather against the women's knowing will. It is also incredibly dangerous (circumcision has dangers but they are not even comparable.)

FGM can cause serious problems in childbirth, as it often involves narrowing of the vaginal opening. FGM is illegal in many places and is often done in non-sterile environments. People can die from this. It often causes problems with urination, including pain during urination for the rest of a women's life.

Here is a lot more info.

I am not for or against circumcision, it's outdated and unnecessary, but many reliable sources find it to not be damaging (hello downvotes, nice to see you) I wouldn't do it to my son even though I'm Jewish. That being said, it is not even close to the same thing as FMG.
