ELI5: Different genres

[–]jheynen24 6 points 8 hours ago*  It's complicated and can't be easily explained, but I'll do my best. The easiest way to define each sub-genre is to listen to music from that sub-genre and create your own definition in your mind of what category a song fits in. House - Simplest definition, house is basically the evolution of disco. House is the most common and popular sub-genre of edm, and actually has its own sub-genres now... Progressive House - Basically Pop influenced upbeat house. Examples: Don't You Worry Child - Swedish House Mafia Reload - Sebastian Ingrosso, Tommy Trash, John Martin Spaceman - Hardwell Deep House - chill electronic music Examples: Anything by Kygo This playlist I made Drum & Bass - This one is actually pretty simple. Go to this song and skip to 1:28. Listen to the beat. That drum & bass beat is the definition of the sub-genre. Every drum & bass song has a beat like that. Trap - Basically any electronic song with lots of bass. Examples: This playlist I made Turn Up - Gent & Jawns Till It Hurts - Yellowclaw Anything by RL Grime or Flosstradamus Trance - Has lots of up and downs and repetition. Usually can be described as portraying a soothing drifting sensation, thus the name trance. Examples: Eiforya - Armin Van Buuren & Andrew Rayel Beyond The Time - A.R.D.I. Dubstep - Really intense electronic music with echoing/distorted base. Examples: Anything by Skrillex or Zomboy When It Gets Messy It can get complicated because sometimes songs can fit in multiple different sub-genres or don't fit in any particularly well. Examples: Doesn't really fit under anything- Anything by Flume (almost his own sub-genre at this point) Cross of Trance, Deep House, and Dubstep Hope that helps. If you have any further questions or I missed a sub-genre you care about (there are a ton) I'll try to help. Edit: Formatting Edit 2: Bit of helpful advice. If you ever wonder what sub-genre a song is just search for it on Beatport. They categorize everything by sub-genres. permalinksavereportgive goldreply

You fuckin wot. permalinksaveparentreportgive goldreply [–]duckbitt 2 points 26 minutes ago  all integrity of this breakdown was lost at this point.. permalinksaveparentreportgive goldreply [–]cascade7 3 points 8 hours ago*  inb4 "that's not progressive house, deep house, or trance." you did a pretty decent job explaining but a lot of people here won't like some of these. Reality is genres are pretty flexible and pretty hard to define at times. It's usually much easier to base "genres" off of labels rather than specific rigid genres permalinksaveparentreportgive goldreply [–]jheynen24 1 point 8 hours ago  Yeah, I know. It's complicated enough that people will argue. But I double checked every song example I used on Beatport, and all were listed as I had them, so by technical definition all of my examples are correct. permalinksaveparentreportgive goldreply [–]zirreN528 1 point 6 minutes ago  You shouldn't depend on Beatport while defining genres. They don't know what they're talking about. Let's take "progressive house" as an example. This is progressive house - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2PM5iTlmRE And now you can compare this to Hardwell's Spaceman. permalinksaveparentreportgive goldreply [–]UncleDemon 3 points an hour ago  I agree mostly but trap is not anything with a lot of bass, trap is electronic music with a hip hop basis. Kygo is pretty much branded tropical house, and flume is future bass. permalinksaveparentreportgive goldreply [–]JohnnyReefe 3 points 9 hours ago  Turn back now. permalinksavereportgive goldreply [–]malaypeter 10 points 7 hours ago  seriously haha. this thread could go 0 to 100 real quick. especially with the highest rated comment calling kygo deep house right now. permalinksaveparentreportgive goldreply [–]likedom 3 points 6 hours ago  This site will help you massively http://everynoise.com/engenremap.html permalinksavereportgive goldreply [–]jackblackninja 1 point 2 hours ago  Tempo - Speed permalinksavereportgive goldreply [–]Charybdis -2 points 4 hours ago  Genre nazi here. Can't really give you specific definitions right now but if you have any general questions I'll be glad to help. The other reply here is absolute bullshit. I also have a subreddit /r/subgenreid where he help people with genres. permalinksavereportgive goldreply

Isn't Kygo considered Tropical house? He's one of the leading artists in the genre along with Thomas Jack and Robin Schulz.
