ELI5: Why doesn’t the United States have a high speed rail system?

The more conservative a state is the fewer rail and public transport systems they have. There may be a whole lot of logistical reasons people will give for this, but the real reason is the individualist capitalist culture of america . Something being public and easy just isn't valued as much here. Being British and moving to Texas I was shocked at how little ''Good'' public transport there is. The most shocking and quite disturbing answers i have gotten is ''Well if we had trains then people who had no business being in the more affluent suburbs would be able to get here a lot easier'' That's why the term ''inner city'' is almost synonymous to ''hood'' or ghetto or whatever they call it these days.

In most european countries, the closer you live to the centre of the main city the more well off you are but it's the opposite in these parts. That being said , the american economy has also benefitted greatly from this since this vacuum has created an amazing automobile market thus creating jobs and giving more people an opportunity. Like all things it has its pros and cons
