I travel a lot in Asia and Southeast Asia and unfortunately I have to be realistic, which includes judging random people approaching me by their skin color. Let’s take Bangkok for example and a black guy comes up to me. 100% of the time it has been an African guy who wants to tell me a sob story and try to get money, or sell drugs, or something along these lines. Am I being racist because now I assume every black guy who approaches me is an African guy who is up to no good? When you travel you need to learn from every experience in order to stay safe. Unfortunately, based on my experience I now need to be on high alert whenever I’m approached by a black person. With white people I’ve occasionally had people try and give me a made up BS story, but I’ve also had many asking for directions or even just striking up a conversation. That’s never happened with a black person.
