Even though it's the birth place of Kurt Cobain, Aberdeen WA isn't going to gatekeep you.

I really like this subreddit for it's accepting attitude and I think the 'come as you are' phrase describes it well. In fact, every since I've been made aware of what gatekeeping is, I can't get Aberdeen's welcome sign out of my head. It represents the exact opposite of gatekeeping while referencing a heavily gatekept band.

I passed through Aberdeen about 10 years ago now and it was a depressed, gloomy little town that had seen better days. My little brother was a major Nirvana fan at the time, though, so we did the full "Kurt" tour and everyone we talked to was more than happy to talk about their town's claim to fame. Some guys even had a statue built of him in a garage, if memory serves me correctly it was something of a shrine, too, and they invited us in to see it.

Everyone in Aberdeen seemed really happy to see people interested in one of their former residents. There was none of that 'are you a true fan?' nonsense. Kurt was a troubled young man and they were sad about what happened to him but thankful for the few visitors it brought to their corner of the world.

Just had to share. =]
