Childhood best friend graduated with a computer science degree from a good school, landed a nice job at the Atlantic City airport, then decided he wasn’t getting enough attention (or something, I’m still not sure) and would go missing every so often. Never answered his phone on these nights, his parents would call me and all his friends crying, swearing they knew he was with us (that’s what he’d tell them). He was always found wandering around the city on anything he could get his hands on, usually a mix of multiple drugs. Lost his job within a month and continued on that path until about a year later I convinced his parents to send him to rehab (they were adamant it wouldn’t do anything). Another ~6 months after that and he’s supposedly clean, but also an unapologetic asshole. Had the nerve to tell me “I never made it about myself and I never brought anyone else into my problems”.
