I was able to work abroad in the past. I've also played games online. Whenever I mentioned I was from the Philippines, there were three topics most often asked about:
Why EDSA?
It's because EDSA is a template for a successful peaceful revolution.
When you meet people abroad who came from countries who've been under dictatorships, or had revolts, it becomes a "shared history". It gets mentioned in their news, in their blogsites, in their social media posts.
I've had past co-workers from the US talk about it; had PSN buddies from Egypt ask me about it; I've had WoW guildmates from Romania, Slovakia, and Poland have that as part of our conversations.
I had a PSN buddy who lives in London but whose family was from Libya. When our gaming group started talking about politics (during Trump's candidacy), I mentioned to them a summary of Martial Law, EDSA, and how Marcos was buried in the Heroes' Cemetery.
The Libyan Londoner just went "wow" and imagined if Gaddafi ended up being buried in a Heroes' Cemetery instead of an unmarked grave.
What I'm saying is - it's something that you can talk about with foreign friends - especially if they've had political issues in their respective countries.
It used to be our legacy.
