Why do you feed raw?

You might want to ask in /r/rawpetfood too for a more concentrated audience.

Qwedrft already covered what "prey model raw" is and its contrast to BARF.

My dog was weaned onto The Honest Kitchen (THK), a dehydrated food product. I wanted him to eat "good" food but THK is expensive so I cut it with "good" kibble. We started with Wellness CORE and experimented with a few different brands and flavors before settling on Orijen Six Fish. He didn't seem to have a preference for any particular kibble type and his stomach agreed with all of them about the same, so the kibble search was fueled by whether I liked the food. I had read about raw food but didn't want to deal with it at the time.

I had lots of trouble getting him to eat his THK and kibble. Like, I would put people food into his bowl with the THK and he wouldn't eat it. I once put a pancake, a sausage link, and an egg in there and I ended up throwing it away. He was rather underweight for a few months. I'd feed him just kibble and he would eat it, but I wasn't super comfortable feeding just kibble. (Whole food is best food, after all.) We tried a variety of dehydrated products and his appetite for those was very low, too. His appetite for kibble waned after a while.

My mom was roasting a chicken and it came with a whole chicken neck and some of the giblets. I fed it to him and he ate all of it without hesitation. :U

After feeding him raw every now and then, I switched to full raw because I was tired of buying food he wasn't eating.

Palatability is what made me switch to raw, but I continue to feed raw because

  • He has a noticeable, positive difference in his demeanor and energy when he eats raw

  • I have full control over his diet and he will never be affected by unsolicited formula changes, hidden ingredients, or pet food recalls

  • His health and mobility is directly linked to inflammation from his diet; the raw diet I feed him now has reduced the rate of lameness and injury by 100%. I no longer need to give him NSAIDs before strenuous exercise and anyone can tell that he just feels so much better on a daily basis. (Full disclosure: raw diet with chicken also made him lame. Raw diet now does not include chicken.)

  • I thought his coat and skin condition were excellent on THK/kibble but then I switched to raw and his coat is literally iridescent in the sunlight. His teeth are awesome for a 5 year old dog that's never had them brushed. His breath is never smelly and neither is his body. He feels so clean all the time.

  • His poops are small, firm, and easy to pick up. If I don't pick them up, they dry out quickly and crumble to dust. No worries about getting sticky, starchy poop on your shoes.

  • I have made similar dietary changes in my own life and have experienced a world of difference in how I feel mentally and emotionally. I am convinced that a diet of primarily whole, fresh food is the foundation of health.
