Kermit performed the hit singles "Bein' Green" in 1970 and "The Rainbow Connection" in 1979 for The Muppet Movie, the first feature-length film featuring Henson's Muppets. The latter song reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kermit's iconic look and voice have been recognizable worldwide since, and in 2006, the character was credited as the author of Before You Leap: A Frog's Eye View of Life's Greatest Lessons, which is an "autobiography" told from the perspective of the character himself. This autobiography delves into the twisted inner workings of Kermit's mind, and his interpretation of reality, his surroundings, and his importance within the universe. In this book, Kermit adopts a nihilistic interpretation of reality, coming to understand his worthlessness to society, and that no being, whether animal or frog, has any inherent value. Kermit discusses his anguish about having the burden of sentience thrust upon him; he is the only sentient frog on the planet, used for the entertainment of another species, and he is left alone to contemplate the meaning (or lack thereof) of his existence and what he describes as "my wasted life, sentience is a burden on the body, mind, and soul. One that I do not wish to bear alone." Throughout the book, Kermit's descriptions of his surroundings become increasingly detailed, as he slowly spirals into insanity. Inspired by the ending of the book "The Awakening," Kermit commits suicide by walking into the ocean, leaving behind a world which would not accept his sentience as a thing of value, and instead used it as a tool for their own entertainment. The book, and Kermit the frog, went onto win a Pulitzer prize and the 2008 Nobel Prize in Literature.
