[FIRST IMPRESSION] XXXTENTACION - 17

Okay serious opinion?

This album was fucking terrible, like probably the worst one I've heard all year, and I'm trying to look at this in the most unbiased way possible.

The first track, where X tells us that we are "entering his mind" and that his album will "numb" or "cure depression" kinda got me amped for this project because, like any regular listener I felt like this was about to be a deeply personal and emotional project from someone who's shown glimmers of potential in previous tracks. However, that was not the case with 17. Like at all.

The album is completely unfinished. Either that or X has just come to terms with the fact that the majority of his fanbase is still in their pre-teens and has an attention span of 2 minutes, considering the longest song on this project clocked in at a whopping 2:44. The instrumentals on this project are not bad at all, I felt like they did their job of capturing the mood that X was trying to accomplish with this project and while, for the most part they were pretty barebones, they were easy on the ears which is a statement that can't be said about a lot of X's work. However, I was met with possibly the most half-assed performance from X I have ever heard as he managed to fall way short of my expectations of him, which were low to begin with. Every song felt like either whiny mumbling about love and depression to the point where I felt like I was consoling my baby brother who I just smacked the shit out of and didn't want my parents to find out, or it was a one verse, indirect, mess of a song that made you feel like you’re less familiar with X than when you started the project. He even has the audacity to call one song an Interlude when he knows damn well that every song on this project was an interlude. It's such an dreary, boring album that fails to capture but an ounce of emotion throughout its 22 minute runtime. The self-proclaimed purpose of this project was to help people with depression but to be honest it made me want to kill myself even more. I've been trying to give X the benefit of a doubt since his career is still young and he's still maturing as an artist but this is an embarrassing piece of work and if I was an X fan I'd be insulted by this rough draft, procrastinated b.s. of a project that I had just listened to.

There's a show in Canada called 'This Hour Has 22 Minutes.' X should've named this album 'These 22 Minutes Feel Like An Hour.'
