Former Facebook exec: "I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works. The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops we’ve created are destroying how society works. No civil discourse, no cooperation; misinformation, mistruth. You are being programmed"

Anyone who claims Facebook and Reddit are the same thing is fucking delusional and probably trying to convince themselves that their Facebook addiction is ok.

There are many reasons why Facebook is much worse than Reddit. Here's a few:

  • Openly sharing private information that's attached to your real name/email/face with a bunch of strangers
  • Giving said information/photos to Facebook inc. to use as they wish
  • Being overtly voyeuristic

Here are a couple of reasons Reddit is better, not perfect, but better:

  • The original and to many, main, purpose of the website is to consume information not share it
  • If you do decide to share information, you can remain completely anonymous without hindering the intended functionality of the website
  • Partaking in conversation is completely optional and not expected like it is on Facebook
  • It is not normal here to share personal details about yourself, in fact it isn't recommended

That being said, Reddit is changing. The old model of anonymous chatter and clicking links is seemingly no longer the "goal" of this website. It seems like /u/spez and the powers that be want to turn Reddit into something more Facebook-esque. You can see it in the little changes that are popping up all around the site...like personalized "profiles" and the increasingly disturbing trend of people using their real names in their profiles...
