The generalization that Americans are stupid is a very ignorant thing to say

American here.

We do have an absolutely atrocious public education system that any first-world country should be ashamed of.

That's not to say that all or even most Americans are dumb, but we're not exactly great at looking our collective selves in the mirror and accepting criticism.

I don't think this attitude that Americans are dumb was very popular worldwide until the George Bush era of the early 2000s. The nationalistic fervor after 9/11, and our rush to war with multiple countries put a bad taste in the mouth of the international community. This has been worsened by what most non-Americans probably see as a step backwards with the election of Donald Trump, and an emerging sense of anti-intellectualism in the US.

It's not that we as Americans are the dumbest bunch, but we might be the loudest, and people worldwide are probably sick of it.
