Gentlemen, start hoarding potatoes, for the potatest shall rule them all.

In a perfect world people would only be satisfied with having more free time and public services, but almost everyone has learned of all the other stuff they could have access to. If you talk with a Bangladeshi or an urban Chinese, they'd tell you they'd kill for a backyard where they could grow their own stuff or have the ability to travel freely in their own vehicles. Even if we could make everyone think more communally, it'd take generations for such changes to start having an impact. I wish there were examples of larger countries living sustainably like Cuba, but they seem to be just a fluke, I mean, why compost all waste when you can use agrochemicals? We need a degrowth mindset and as long as the oil and natural gas flow, I don't see it happening.
