The use of "Girl" when campaigns are targeted at adult females I find super degrading.

“Female” comes from the Latin femina (a woman), and its diminutive femella (a young woman). Old French adopted femelle to mean any woman. This entered Medieval English, with its spelling and pronunciation gradually changing to become female

“Male” comes from the Latin mas and masculus, meaning ‘a male’. In Old French this became masle, which entered Medieval English where its spelling and pronunciation gradually changed to become male.

Female therefore doen’t come from - or have any relationship to - male. They developed seperately into their current forms.

Female is only a descriptor.

Female has been used as a noun since the early 14th century. Yes, in most varieties of English it's mainly used as an adjective, and the noun has a derogatory meaning, however, language is changing.
