Got laid off on Monday. Have $40 for groceries to get me through the month of December. Could use some help!

Your parents sound fun. They couldn't put some food together for you? Grrr.

Do you have anything you can sell easily? Books, clothes, electronics, etc.?

If you're adventurous, you might also search or ask in r/dumpsterdiving for tips in your general area. They're pretty vague to not call attention to companies searching themselves, but seem friendly enough so might be worth a try.

Hopefully, there's a food bank you're not aware of. Do you have a Costco membership? If so, you could go in around lunch time, and enjoy the samples. Whole Foods often has all kinds of cheese, nuts, olives, etc. out to try. Trader Joes usually has some kind of nibbly thing, and wine or coffee.

If you're in an area with open art studios for holidays, no harm browsing those and enjoying a few snacks here and there either. Same with any events you can find with free food samples or promos. McDonald's app on your phone. If there is a Krogers near you, I've noticed they always seem to have something free each week, and it's usually a good item, like yogurt or pasta sauce, etc. I don't live near one,but r/freebies likely has info

Obviously those are Band-Aids, but little free treats and samples can make it a tiny bit easier if you're on a really shoestring budget.

Good luck!
