Graduate school is not worth it

I got my PhD last year and agree. The job market for most life science PhDs kind of sucks. The few available jobs pay like shit (e.g. adjunct professor, ~$30/hr and no benefits). And for people who don’t live and breathe research, academia is not an option. It’s basically a 2.0 FTE job with a salary about the same as a school teacher, and that’s not a lifestyle I desire.

I recently decided to apply for a high school teaching job because I do like teaching— the silver lining to my PhD is that I discovered this passion. If I don’t like teaching high school, I’ll do an accelerated bachelors in nursing. My fiancée who is an RN works 36 (tough) hours a week, can “leave work at work”(something not possible for researchers), and gets paid ~$40k more than me (and I’m at the higher end of a typical postdoc salary).

Unless you have a job in mind that requires a PhD, I’d recommend not getting it.
